You know that moment when you pull up to an intersection at the same time as someone else?
One of you has to go first.
If you’re like me, your default is to allow the other person to go.
The universal sign for “go ahead” is the good ‘ol wave.
The indication to proceed.
I don’t do that anymore.
I point.
Not at the intersection. Right at the person behind the wheel.
It’s a game changer.
People smile. They laugh. They give me a thumbs up. Devil’s horns. Fist salutes. You name it.
I’ve literally watched people’s day change, in an instant, right before my eyes.
The wave is generic. Standard-issue. Everyone does the wave.
The point delights people. It’s different. It adds something unexpected to their day.
The wave is a command. Like I’m telling them what to do — GO.
The point says “It’s all you. This is your moment, baby. You’re first. What do you wanna do?”
A friend of mine has been fucking amazed at how people respond to this gesture.
He said “if you just told me about this, and I hadn’t seen it myself, I would have assumed you were full of shit.”
He’s witnessed its power. And now, he’s a believer.
This may not work for everyone. I’ll admit doing this may not be most women’s first choice. It might be a little masculine. I’m not sure.
Try it out and let me know what happens.
This post - in particular the photo - delighted me so much I've made a tribute to it in my IG stories Ryan, or should I call you, Travis Bickle? ;)
Hahahaha gonna try this out. And that pic is gold.
