Understanding Your Audience for Maximum Impact
I had a call with my client, Suzanne, a yoga studio owner, where we tackled a crucial aspect of content creation—truly understanding and resonating with your audience. Here's a quick summary of our conversation:
Suzanne mentioned how she often hears people talking negatively to themselves, saying things like, "I don't think I can do that," or, "I have a bad hip." She's more interested in addressing this negative self-talk than perfecting yoga poses. She tries to drop positive vibes in her emails by sharing her personal experiences overcoming anxiety and other challenges, but it often feels like clichéd motivational talk. Her words: “Tony Robbins rah-rah bullshit.”
I suggested Suzanne take a straightforward approach: create a raw, unfiltered list of 100 negative things her students say to themselves. No need to spin it positively. Just lay it out as it is. This method directly taps into people’s inner thoughts and makes them feel understood. By articulating their feelings as well as or better than they can, she positions herself as someone who truly gets them and can help.
Suzanne loved the idea and plans to try it. This approach will keep the focus on her client’s problems or experience, rather than shifting it to her and her brilliant solutions. Her clients will feel better understood, and she will have more impact.
So, if you're ever stuck on what to write, try listing out what your audience is thinking and feeling. Start with 50-100 points and see how it transforms your content.
Let me know how it goes.
