Here’s a response I got to my post/email yesterday:
🙄 Ryan, I’m glad you’re working on yourself, but who are you kidding??? You’re still just telling a story.
First of all, look at the big brain on this guy.
Second, “just?” I’m “just” telling a story?
I’m not “just” doing anything.
No shit I’m telling a story. What the fuck else would I do? What the fuck do YOU do?
You want me to make a list of my feelings and keep you updated? Or maybe you’d rather I write you a nice little article with some how-to marketing advice that you won’t use?
No.
I’m giving the people what they want. I’m an entertainer first.
People want to see an evolution. I try to model successful series fiction characters. The characters that people are so invested in, that they pre-order the next installment months before it comes out. Year after year after year. The Harry Potters, the James Bonds, the Sherlock Holmes.
(My personal favorite: Orphan X)
The characters that people are so fascinated with, they cannot wait to find out what they do next.
I suggest you do the same.
Or maybe you’re one of those geniuses who not only doesn’t read fiction because they “don’t have time,” they actually take pride in the fact? (not smart)
If you want to maintain a relationship with your audience over a long period of time, you have to share more than just the practical — the mechanical — the teaching.
If that’s all you do, they’ll be bored with you in 12 months. Then they’ll find a guy like me.
So while I’m trying my best to be honest about what I’m going through right now — in real time — of course I’m going to do it in story form.
My primary objective with the work I’m publishing here is to provide entertainment. Sometimes, “edutainment.”
But I’m still me. I’m still a story teller. I’m still the fucking man.
Just a more evolved, more sexy, more thoughtful, more handsome, more feeling, more loving, softer, tender, romantic version.
If you’re not here for it, you know what to do. If you can’t find the link, just reply and let me know. I’ll take care of it for you.
Smooches. 💋
Ryan
The thing with fictional characters is that they don't come out of character to talk to the audience about themselves as characters. How do you fit that into this metaphor or whatever it is?
Yeah, definitely meta. I feel like there's a better way to ask my question, but I'm not sure what it is. Let me think for a bit.
