I’ve been out of town for the last month so I haven’t been going to my weekly therapy appointments.
Today was my first time back since I left.
On my way out, my therapist asked “oh wait, have you been on Instagram?”
I said “I’m turning it back on next Tuesday.”
She gave me a funny look like “uhhh.. are you sure that’s a good idea?”
I told her what happened during my brief reactivation a couple weeks ago — that I realized it’s too effective of a tool for me to just abandon it.
“don’t worry. I have a plan this time. I got this.”
She was like “okkkkkk. I’m looking forward to hearing about it next week.”
I mentioned the plan in yesterday’s email.
I’m gonna stay focused on the goals that matter to me — on why I’m there. And I’m gonna put boundaries on the way I use IG to support those goals.
I’m not going to make content for my followers anymore. Instead, I’m going to use Instagram to extend the conversation with email subscribers (and clients).
I’ll say more about what this is gonna look like this week, but here’s the main thing:
Rather than use my most potent creative energy on talking videos before I handle the important work, I’m not even gonna open Instagram until I do these two things:
Send my daily email
Take care of everyone in the Unusually Focused Private Client Group (after it opens. soon.)
And I’m going to contain how much time I spend dealing with comments.
These changes should solve at least 80% of the problems I was creating for myself.
And hopefully keep my therapist happy.
there's something to not using instagram until a certain point in the day. I am using the app opal but you can do it without it, but I have given myself the rule of not using instagram until about 5.30 pm and then just using it in one chunk. That way you can get all your stuff done when you're higher energy and then in the evening when the energy dips is the perfect time to use it. Don't want to be a person who checks throughout the day. So I believe this plan of yours will work as long as you truly commit. These apps aren't evil but we have to really figure out how to use them in the right way as they are invaluable.
